Hanuman Jayanti Festival


Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Hanuman, the Vanara god, widely venerated throughout India, especially in North India. It is celebrated during the month of Chaitra. In Gujarat and some other regions in North India, Ashwin Krishna Chaturdasi (the day before Diwali), popularly viewed as Hanuman Jayanti.


In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, fans celebrate Hanuman Jayanthi under Margali Masam or Margazhi months (December-January). It is observed in the Tamil month Margazhi, which is one of the most promising months in Tamil calendar. In 2011, Hanuman Jayanthi, the Tamil month Margazhi January 4 Varanasi Sankat Mochan Temple is one of the famous temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This festival is more important among brahmacharis, body builders and wrestlers.

Spiritual discourses are held on this day from the sunrise and Prasads is distributed only after sunset. On Saturday and Tuesday seen as a favorable day to worship Lord Hanuman. Hanumanji regarded as a symbol of strength and energy. Lord Ram remembered and prayed for this day. The devotees will visit temples and apply Tilak on the forehead sindhoor Hanuman from the body since this is considered good luck. Cultural programs are organized in most Hindu temples on this day.
